Raquette Lake Overnight Paddling Adventure

September 9-12, 2021, Don Streed will lead a four day, three night paddling and camping trip to Tioga Point primitive campground on Raquette Lake.

Raquette Lake is one of the largest lakes in the Adirondacks with 99 miles of shoreline, and it is one with a very limited number of private camps as so much of the shoreline is state land without road access.  Tioga point is a New York State Campground with only 15 lean-tos and 10 tent sites, accessible only by water.  After Labor Day NYS Parks does not take reservations for Tioga Point and sites are available on a first come-first serve basis.

Early September is a great time to be on Raquette Lake.  Tioga Point, the site or a former great camp which was lost to fire, offers great views of the Lake, the surrounding mountains, and spectacular sunsets!

On Thursday, we will paddle from the hamlet of Raquette Lake to Tioga Point and set up camp, returning on Sunday with wonderful memories.  Each day we will set out on paddling and/or hiking explorations determined by weather and wind.  We could paddle south and east up the historic Marion river, or paddle north to the portage and carry into Forked Lake, or paddle the South Inlet and hike to Great Camp Sagamore.  You can also try your hand at fishing for lake trout, brook trout small mouth bass or perch. Or just enjoy the sandy beach and the beautiful, peaceful surroundings.

Paddlers will be expected to supply and transport their own gear and provisions. Each person is responsible for providing, preparing, and cooking their own meals.  But of course, it’s nice to bring something to share.  There is no fee for the trip.

Sound interesting? Want to go?  For further details and questions answered, email Don Streed at dstreed1@nycap.rr.com. Don has led trips to Tioga Point and is looking forward to another opportunity to share this favorite spot with new friends.
